About Robert
Robert Staaf is an independent clinical social worker and therapist who provides compassionate, evidence-based mental health care to individuals and families. His experience spans psychotherapy and child and family welfare, and he has supported children, youth and families through both crisis intervention and ongoing therapy.
As a pet owner and animal lover, he is passionate about how animals can support mental health, and he brings an understanding of the human-animal bond to his evaluations.
My approach is client-centered and evidence-based. I tailor the work to each person and family, and I aim to create a safe, supportive space for lasting change.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQs →Is Mr. Staaf licensed to practice in my state?
Mr. Staaf is licensed to provide telehealth evaluations in the states and the District of Columbia listed on this page. If your state is not on that list, he cannot conduct your evaluation.
Will Mr. Staaf automatically approve my ESA request?
No. Completing the intake does not produce a letter. Mr. Staaf reviews your information and makes his own clinical judgment, and documentation is issued only when he concludes that an emotional support animal is clinically appropriate for you.
Do I need an existing mental health diagnosis?
No. The evaluation considers your current symptoms and circumstances, whether or not you already have a diagnosis. A prior diagnosis is not required in order to be assessed.
How long does the evaluation take?
It depends on your individual case, including whether a follow-up is needed. The intake questionnaire itself takes about five minutes to complete.
Is this an online questionnaire?
No. The questionnaire is intake information, not the evaluation. A licensed clinician reviews it and forms an independent clinical judgment before any documentation is issued.
What happens after my evaluation?
If Mr. Staaf determines that an emotional support animal is clinically appropriate, your documentation is provided through your secure account. If it is not appropriate, no letter is issued, and our money-back guarantee applies under our refund policy.
Can my landlord contact my clinician?
A landlord may contact the signing provider to confirm that a letter is genuine, but your diagnosis and clinical detail are never shared with your landlord.
Can I choose Mr. Staaf for my evaluation?
You may be matched with a clinician licensed in your state of residence. Whether Mr. Staaf is available to you depends on where you live.
